Don’t Be A Foolish Virgin!

In Matthew 25:1-12, Jesus gives us the parable of the ten virgins. They are awaiting the coming of the bridegroom (Christ’s return), who has been delayed. Five of the virgins were wise and took lamps with extra oil to burn while they awaited his arrival. Five were foolish and took no oil with them. While they waited they fell asleep, and at midnight when the cry went out “Behold the bridegroom. Come out to meet Him”, they had no oil in their lamps and were forced to go to a dealer to purchase some. While they were gone, the wise virgins, who were prepared, went in to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. When the foolish virgins finally arrived, they cried: “Lord, Lord, open to us”, the bridegroom replied: “Truly I say to you, I do not know you.”

There are no more dreadful words you could hear in life.

Many Christians have fallen asleep and their lamps have gone out. It was only recently that God forcefully shook me awake from my slumber and made it clear, in no uncertain terms, that we need to be prepared for His coming; we need to be watching and waiting with our lamps burning and our oil supply full. We need to be living Ephesians 6:10-20: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,  and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.  In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;  and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.”

As Jesus told us in Revelation 3:3 “Remember then what you received and heard; keep that and repent. If you will not awake, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come upon you.” This is the Church, His Body, He is talking to, not the unredeemed. He goes on to say in Revelation 3:5 “He who conquers shall be clad thus in white garments, and I will not blot his name out of the book of life; I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

I make supplication Father for all the saints (Your redeemed in Christ) that they wake up now and take on their full armor, so that none are found to be foolish virgins, in Jesus name. I also pray that you keep my eye single and focused only on You, fully armored and on full watch, and tuned in to Your every Word and command, so that I not be caught off guard and unprepared. Amen.
